Banish the Winter Blues with a Visit to Canary Wharf

After the excitement of the Christmas season has passed, life can feel a little lacklustre. However, London presents an exciting programme of events and attractions that will rejuvenate you this winter.

A trio of delights awaits you when you stay at the Lansbury Heritage Hotel. From ice skating to illuminated art installations and an elevated tropical garden, Canary Wharf offers many uplifting activities.

The Canary Wharf Ice Rink

Winter may have arrived in London but taking to the nearby Canary Wharf ice rink is bound to shake off any post-holiday winter blues.

Perfect for both confident and budding skaters, with skate aid stabilisers available for children, each 50-minute session gives you the opportunity to have fun on an impressive 1275 square metres of ice.

Here are three reasons why the Canary Wharf Ice Rink is sure to light up your stay:

  • The atmosphere is special, with more than 1,000 fairy lights
  • Live DJ & Saxophonist events are held on selected Wednesday evenings
  • This sizeable venue has a roof, so you don’t need to factor in the weather.

Imagine taking to the ice with your partner, family or friends in this charming setting.

Enjoy refreshments and snacks at the onsite Off Piste Bar after your session ends. There’s no need to bring your own ice skates either. It’s all included in your ticket (pre-booking is essential).

Skate to your heart’s content in Canada Square Park whilst you can. This pop-up space will be packed up on 25th February 2023.

Canary Wharf’s Winter Lights Festival

The perfect remedy for long winter nights, this free illuminated festival will welcome 21 installations from leading light artists to the Canary Wharf area.

A multi-site event that encourages you to explore and engage, Winter Lights makes full use of the dark nights to delight onlookers. Several of these light-based artworks are set to premiere in the UK for the first time and many are interactive displays, adding another dimension to the event. This is not the time to forget your smartphone or camera.

With street food, dinner and cocktails available from the surrounding restaurants and bars, you can expect a magical evening whatever your interest in art.

Winter Lights will take place every day between 18th-28th January (5-10 pm). Discover a description of the different artworks on display and access a map of the lights here.

Tropical Crossrail Place Roof Gardens

Escape the British weather and enjoy the views whilst elevated above the city. These rooftop gardens form part of the Crossrail Place development and feature geographical planting reflective of Canary Wharf’s seafaring and trading history.

Many of the plants that were brought to the (now redeveloped) docks from exotic lands during the 1700s and 1800s feature here today. Positioned close to the Meridian line that separates East from West, striking plants, such as maples, can be seen in the eastern half of the garden. Move west and you will encounter different plants native to the Americas.

Stay seated for a while on one of the many benches and meander pathways under the protection of a 310-metre-long timber-detail roof. Entry is free and open until 9pm. More information can be found on the Crossrail Place Roof Garden website.
